Tile Installations

Showers, floors and backsplashes, set on a substrate that is ready for water.

Why does tile crack, sound hollow or leak?

Tile itself almost never fails. What fails is whatever it's stuck to. A hairline crack in a grout line usually means the floor under it flexes. A tile that sounds hollow when you tap it has lost its bond to the setting bed, often because the mortar didn't fully contact the back of the tile. Once one lets go, its neighbors follow.

Showers fail from the inside out. A shower pan that was never properly waterproofed, or a curb that was left to soak, passes water into the framing long before you see a stain. Dark grout that won't come clean, a musty smell in the bathroom, or a loose tile at the base of the wall are the early signs that water has found its way behind the surface.

Backsplashes and entry floors tell a simpler story: grout that was mixed too wet, tile laid without a plan for the cut edges, or a layout that ends in a sliver against the wall. None of it is hard to see once you know to look, and all of it is cheaper to correct before the next room gets finished around it.

What does the work actually look like, in order?

The substrate comes first, and it's where most of the hours go. We check that the surface is flat, solid and the right material for a wet area, and we waterproof a shower before a single tile is set. Skipping that step is how a good-looking bathroom turns into a rebuild three years on.

Then the layout. We dry-fit the pattern from the center of the room or wall so the cuts land evenly at the edges, set the tile in a full bed of mortar, and keep the lines straight as it goes. Grout waits until the setting bed has cured, and it's packed tight and cleaned off the face before it can haze.

For anything bigger than a one-day repair, we'll come out for an in-home estimate in Fort Collins. For a few tiles or a small backsplash, email photos and a description to the estimates address and we'll quote from there. Billing is by the craftsman hour at $165 with a 4-hour minimum, our craftsmen have at least fifteen years of experience, and we don't mark up the materials we buy. Call 970-632-0138 to start.

What should you do once the tile is set?

Give it time before it sees water or weight. Grout and mortar need to cure, and we'll tell you how long to stay off a floor or out of a shower for the specific products used on your job. Rushing that window is the most common way a fresh install gets damaged.

Sealing matters for natural stone and for cement-based grout, which both drink up stains. Reseal on a schedule that suits the material, and keep harsh acidic cleaners off stone. For everyday cleaning, a pH-neutral cleaner is the safer default.

Watch the caulked joints where tile meets the tub, the corners and the floor, because those are meant to move and are meant to be renewed. All of our labor carries a one-year warranty, and if a tile loosens or a grout line opens inside that year, call us. A small repair caught early is far easier than chasing a leak.
